What is resolution?
Resolution refers to the amount of information contained in your photo. Resolution is measured in pixels, or mega pixels (1 mega pixel = 1 million pixels), each digital image is made up of a certain number of pixels, the more pixels in your image the higher the resolution and generally the higher the quality of the image. High resolution images can be enlarged very easily and are perfect for printing on large posters or canvas, whereas images with a low resolution may only be suitable for printing on small items such as 6"x4" prints, or a photo mug. If we try to enlarge a low resolution image it will tend to pixelate (appear blocky), as there is not sufficient information contained within the image to enlarge it. Our photo print site will display a low resolution warning when the image you are trying to use has insufficient resolution for printing on the product you have selected.

Whilst high resolution images are better for enlarging and provide a lot more options as to the available photo products you can print on, a high resolution image does not necessarily mean it is a high quality image, a high resolution image can still be blurry, out of focus, or under or over exposed.

If your camera has a high resolution mode, it is better to select this mode when taking photos, but remember the higher the resolution of the image, the more memory is required to store the image, so you may need a bigger memory card for your camera.

Why do some of my images get cropped? (its all in the science)

Most compact digital cameras take photos in a ratio of 4:3 (standard digital ratio), whereas film style cameras take photos in a ration of 3:2 (standard analogue ratio). The standard print size of 6"x4" is a carry over from film cameras and is not particularly well suited to photos taken from digital cameras due to the slight cropping that occurs.

When a photo is not in the correct ratio for the print size you have selected, it will be centred on the print so only a small portion of the top & bottom, or sides will be cropped. In the print preview, the parts of your photo outside the red box will be cropped. For example:

We produce thousands of photos everyday like this, we recommend you double check the cropping of your images just in case there are parts of your images that are particularly close to the edge and that may be cropped.

What other options do I have?

1. You can adjust the crop of the image to ensure the main subject of the image will be printed.
2. You can select a non-standard crop (this will print the full image but white borders may occur). For example:

3. Select the digital print size (5.3"x4"), or an alternative larger size with the correct ratio (6"x8" for example).
4. If you are a budding enthusiast and the cropping issue is a major concern for you, you could upgrade your camera to a digital SLR (although this is slightly more expensive option than just adjusting your crop). Digital SLR cameras generally produce photos in a ratio of 3:2 which is ideal for a 6"x4" print.

How long will the upload process take?
The upload time depends on the amount of images you are uploading, the file size of the images and the speed of your internet connection. The uploader will provide an estimated image upload time once the upload process has begun. Photo Igloo utilises the latest technology to minimise upload times and ensure our uploader is one of the fastest available.

How many Photos can I upload?
You can upload as many images as you like.

If you are uploading a lot of images, it may be a good idea to change your computers sleep settings so your PC or Mac doesn't go into sleep mode. If your computer goes into sleep mode and turns itself off whilst you are uploading images, it will disable your internet connection and stop the upload process. To change your sleep settings go to Power Settings or power options in the Control Panel for a PC, or "EnergySaver" settings in System Preferences for a Mac.

Do you reduce the quality of my image during upload?
No, we upload your images at full resolution and file size.

What happens if my internet connection drops out during the upload process?
Although internet drop outs are rare these days, if your internet connection does drop out during the upload process, don't worry, our uploader will automatically resume the upload process as soon as it is able to re-establish the connection.

What happens to my images when they are uploaded?
Your images are uploaded to our storage server in their original size allowing you to place orders with Photo Igloo.

How long do you store my images for?
We keep your images online for a period of 7 days, if you visit Photo Igloo using the same computer that you placed your original order with, you will be able to view and access all images that you have previously uploaded.
